What’s on offer?

Reading Recovery:
A trained Reading Recovery teacher provides one on one reading and writing tuition to grade one students. Reading Recovery is a program to assist the lowest achieving students who, after their first year at school, are experiencing reading and writing difficulties. It is specifically conducted for students in grade one. Students selected into the program receive a series of individual, 30-minute Reading Recovery lessons daily from a specially trained teacher.

The individual half hour session is conducted every day, reading familiar books, reinforcing knowledge of letters and words, constructing a sentence, and reading new literature. Each student’s program runs for a 12 to 20 week period.

Here are some simple prompts you may wish to use when reading with your child:

·        Are there clues in the picture?

·        Did that make sense?

·        Try that word again.

·        What would you expect to see next?

·        Do you know another word that looks like that?

·        How did you know that word?

·        I like the way that you knew that was wrong all by yourself?

·        What did you notice?

·        Does it sound right?

·        Does it look right?

·        What might help you?

Remember to Prompt, Pause (allow time for thinking) and Praise, as all reading experiences should be positive.

Beach Awareness Program:
Each year all students participate in an intensive beach awareness program at Anglesea’s Point Roadknight Beach. Austswim trained teachers teach children swimming skills in the sea in groups of 5, under the watchful eye of a qualified lifeguard.

Outdoor Education Program:
Students in grades 3-6 participate in a 6-8 week Outdoor Education program. Grade 3 children participate in various activities such as fishing, orienteering and bushwalking. Grade 4 students participate in an intensive Bike Education program. Grade 5 students visit the local Anglesea Recreation Camp for initiative and challenging activities including high ropes course and the giant swing. Grade 6 students receive surfing lessons by trained professionals from local business Go Ride A Wave.  Below are details about this year’s Bike Education program.

Students beat the Bike Ed Challenge!

Grade 4 students have concluded their Bike Education program at Anglesea Primary School.  The program included four sessions involving students learning to do a “bike check” to see if all parts of their bike were working properly and then a “helmet check” to ensure it was properly fitted.  Students rode around a specifically designed “track” requiring them to safely scan for other road users and pedestrians, use the figure of 8 to learn to give way, ride in and out of U-turns to improve balance and bike handling skills and into and through a roundabout whilst obeying road rules.  The fifth session involved students completing the Bike Ed Challenge, where they had to individually ride about a set course and score points for following road rules.  Bike Education trained staff from Anglesea’s Camp Wilkin and some parents assisted with judging the students riding skills.  All students successfully beat the Challenge, with winner Will Solly scoring 35 of the 36 points available!  To conclude the Bike Education program the students, staff from Camp Wilkin and many parents rode the “Tour de Anglesea” involving a ride about the town including Coogoorah Park, allowing students to apply the skills they learnt during the program into a real-life and controlled environment.

Many camps operate throughout the year. They include a Prep/Year 1 Breakfast at school, Year 2 overnight camp to Burnside Camp in Anglesea. I.C.T. (Information and Communications Technology). i.e.computers, laptops, digital cameras, multi media, movie cameras etc.

Anglesea Primary School has 2 computers for every 3 students!  That is, 138 students using 95 computers.  Of these 95 computers we have:

·        44 Desktop computers which are housed throughout all of our 7 classrooms for all students to use.

·        24 ACER Netbooks (i.e. laptops) which are fully mobile, networked and shared amongst all students to use within our school, including outside under shade areas.

·        27 Lenovo Netbooks (i.e. laptops) which our Year 5 students are trialling for the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

All computers allow students to access the internet, school intranet, multi-media software and their individual files.  Apart from computers and netbooks, students use all forms of I.C.T. (Information and Communication Technology) including digital cameras, digital video recorders, flip-cameras, multi media projectors etc. These technologies engage them in a wide variety of learning experiences.  They make videos, movies, Powerpoint presentations, digital port-folios  and animations. Exciting software programs are used to improve their reading, writing, maths, science, art and thinking skills.  Student “blogs” will be introduced in the near future.
